For this price, the The Boxee Box by D-Link HD Streaming Media Player comes highly respected and is a popular choice with most people. D-Link Systems, Inc. have included some great touches and this means great value.
Netflix: Yes
Hulu: Yes
Amazon Video: None
YouTube: Yes
Design: The Boxee Box from D-Link has one of the most distinctive design of multimedia streaming boxes on the market. It's designed to look like a cube with an edge chopped off, leaving a sloping look that really stands out. Green accents make this a truly recognizable product, and there is no doubt that it will have an impact on how your home theater setup seems to do. That said, some people may not like a product with such a striking design (see below for some issues).
Qwerty Remote Control: Remote control is as unique as the design of the Boxee Box itself. On the one hand, it seems a minimalist and stylish remote control. Turn it on, however, and you'll see that it comes with a full QWERTY keyboard. A keyboard is an excellent addition to any media box, especially one like this that comes with a Web browser (see below). This makes it easy to search through your content and writing of web addresses.
Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi is becoming more common in the media-streaming devices today, but it's still worth mentioning as a benefit to the Boxee Box by D-Link. If you prefer, you can also connect to the internet with a wired Ethernet connection, but the included Wi-Fi makes it easy to get started and browse online content.
User Interface: The interface for Boxee Box from D-Link is the smart and modern, with some great graphics that makes it easier to browse through the selection of TV series and films on offer. Everything is divided into categories on the website, including your own personal media collection, so it's easy to find in the unit.
Web Browser With Flash: One thing that makes this box stand above many of its competitors is the fact that it comes with a browser. This means you can surf the Internet, and even connect to online streaming sites, thanks to the fact that Boxee Box supports such a wide range of file formats, including Flash (unlike Apple TV). Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this (see below).
Ports: There is a good range of ports on the box, including the ability to older standard definition TVs connected if you wish. Or you can stick to HDMI if you have an HD display. Two USB ports are useful for those who want to load your own content on the device.
Content: For the supply of content built into the unit, you get Netflix, Vudu, video podcasts, Pandora, MLB.T TV, YouTube and the NHL. This is a good choice for most users, but not quite live up to Roku standards. Note that, as with all digital media device, some of these requires a paid subscription.
Supported Files: One of the biggest selling points of the Boxee Box from D-Link is the fact that it can support so many different file types. And because it comes with two USB slots and an SD memory card makes it easy to upload your content up and look at your own home videos, photographs and listen to music. In this area, it is actually better than most of the competition, such as Apple TV, Roku and Logitech Revue. Western Digital is the only other streaming device that has the same range of file formats.
Streaming from networked devices: The Boxee Box can also stream content from PCs, Macs and hard drives connected to your home network, which is useful for those who do not want to bother connecting an external hard drive.
We get it – you want to the freedom to watch whatever you want on your TV: Movies, TV Shows, Sports, but also any other video that is available online. You want to do it without having to connect a computer to your TV or use a keyboard and mouse. We’re all over it. The Boxee Box by D-Link: watch, organize, share – you are now in full command of your TV for the first time. No rules, no contracts.
Price: Although Boxee Box from D-Link offers relatively good value for money, many of its competitors come down in price since it was first launched. Even though most of them do not offer great file support that Boxee does, it is one that can: WD Live TV. And this box is about $ 100 cheaper than the Boxee, although it does not have the benefit of a web browser.
Design: As mentioned above, it is clear that D-Link has gone to some effort to make Boxee stand out when viewed in conjunction with any other digital media device. To some the design may have noticed too much. It is also impractical for most TV cabinets where you normally stack one unit on top of each other. For it is not flat, you can not do this.
Choice of free content: Many owners of Boxee Box by D-Link has been disappointed by the range of content available for free. Although it's nice to see popular subscription services included the free choice does not leave much to be desired, and some TV shows are not properly marked with Boxee. Hulu Plus is also noticeably missing from the device, but Boxee is going to put it in a future firmware update.
Blocked Streaming Website: The best thing about owning a digital streaming device with a web browser, in theory, is the fact that you can stream media from a variety of websites. Unfortunately, sites like Hulu started blocking Boxee users, just like Google TV. Having said that the browser is still a huge bonus and something you will not find on the rivals, including the main rival WD Live TV.
Remote Control: Although the tool is a great design, it can feel little compulsion to write on the QWERTY keyboard, and it's all too easy to find yourself accidentally pressing buttons on the other side of the remote control while you write.
The Boxee Box by D-Link has certainly a lot going for it. Although more expensive than rivals such as Roku and Apple TV, it comes with its own Web browser, a nice selection of content streaming apps, a well designed user interface and the ability to recognize almost any type of file. The connection is perfect for users who want the opportunity to play their existing media collection on your TV screen. The only product worth considering, in this sense, is WD Live TV. Arriving at around $ 80 cheaper, it may be a better choice if you do not mind giving up the browser.
