WD TV Live Hub is an option for those who want both the ability to stream from the internet directly on their TV, and also to their own files to store on the device for TV playback. This is similar to the WD TV Live, but comes with a hard drive and no Wi-Fi Internet connection is so worth paying the extra money for this device?
For this price, the Western Digital WD TV Live Hub 1 TB Media Center is widely recommended and is a regular choice amongst many people. Western Digital have included some excellent touches and this equals good value.
Netflix: Yes
Hulu: Yes
Amazon Video: No
YouTube: Yes
Design: Due to the fact that the WD TV Live Hub comes with a hard drive included, it is a little bigger than some streaming devices like the Apple TV and Roku 2. But it is still small enough to easily fit into your existing entertainment unit, and the glossy black design makes it look stylish but discreet.
Storage Space: The main difference between the WD TV Live Hub and the newer and cheaper WD TV Live is the fact that the former boasts a 1TB hard drive. Hard is what Western Digital is famous for, and 1 TB is lots of room for storing your media files. This is great for those who have a very large collection of digital media, and who want to be able to accommodate it in one multimedia device, instead of connecting an external hard drive or streaming over your home network.
File Format: WD TV Live Hub supports a wide variety of file formats, which makes such an attractive option compared with devices Roku.
Streaming content to and from network devices: WD TV Live Hub can connect to other devices on the network, whether that means other computers or game consoles set up on your home network. This makes it easy to access multimedia files stored on your PC for streaming via your television. DLNA support makes it easy to meet a wide range of devices to connect, as long as they also support DLNA.
But it's not only streaming to the WD TV on the Hub, there is an advantage, you can also stream and download files from the Hub to the network devices. This means you can get access to all content stored on the Hub is 1 TB internal hard drive while you are on your PC. This is an excellent way to transfer and even back up your media files without wires, and almost no setup.
Row content: WD TV Live Hub is excellent to see your own local content, but it's also great to stream content from the Internet. Services include: Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, YouTube, Flickr, Blockbuster and DailyMotion. This is an excellent choice, but not quite as big as competitors like Roku - Some users may be disappointed that Amazon Video is not on the list.
Connections on the box means you can connect older SD TV as well as HD displays. This is something that devices like the Apple TV simply can not offer and a bonus for users who want to get some life to the older standard definition monitors.
USB ports: Two USB ports available on the WD TV Hub, which makes it easy to connect an external hard drive if you need even more space. You can also link to items such as cameras and a Wi-Fi adapter if you need it.
Store your digital media collection, play home network media, watch movies, and access Internet favorites. Enjoy it all on your big screen TV in brilliant high-definition with the WD TV Live Hub media center, a network media player with a built-in high-capacity hard drive.
Price: The included 1TB HDD WD TV Live Hub certainly bumps up the price of this product compared to the WD TV Live, Apple TV and Roku. But it's well worth paying a little more for a place to store your media collection if you have many files.
No Wi-Fi: One of the main disadvantages of this product is the fact that it does not come with the ability to connect to Wi-Fi networks, as cheaper WD TV Live model. Rivals that Boxee comes with this built in as standard, and has continued to play a wide range of different file formats. That said, it's not too difficult to USB Wi-Fi dongle if you can easily connect via the Ethernet port.
Although the WD TV Live Hub is undoubtedly more expensive than alternatives such as Roku, and it does not come with Wi-Fi as a cheaper WD TV Live, it has some features that should make it appeal to more advanced users.
You can not beat the 1 TB hard drive compared with rivals such as Boxee and Netgear's NeoTV 550, and the WD TV Live Hub also has an excellent range of online streaming services. Altogether, these factors make Live Hub worth its price.
